Pet Line Up

Tia's tips: If you are one who tends to use pattern paper as the background for your stamped images-shake things up and look at using a stencil. Stencils can offer a cleaner-softer background, or a darker-moody vibe. Either way you get more of a type of story book feel when sweeping your stencil with dye or distress inks. Of course you can also get very bold-eclectic look by creating a stenciled background with acrylic paints. Try blending them into a texture or modeling paste for added depth and texture-but now THAT is a whole other post!

THE PROJECT:

I laughed so hard when I saw this new stamp release set from C.C. Designs, the facial expressions immediately reminded me of a certain teenage girl (who will remain anonymous!) and whose birthday I had just missed!

Matching these 'grouchy-snarky' looking pets with bright, joyful birthday design paper (DP) just didn't feel right for a background. I didn't want to overshadow the images by drawing a background (also short on time-I was already late in sending out a card!) Stencils to the rescue! I created this layered brick background with the brick stencil from The Crafters Workshop and then using 3 shades of Distress Inks. First swipe with Pumice Stone, then a light pass through of Black Soot and finally Fired Brick. I added the texture with a 0.5 White Gelly Roll pen and 0.1 Black Multi liner pen. After inking up each Grouchy Pet, I fussy cut them out and saved my favorite for the inside of my card. I used Comic Speech Bubbles Die Set-from Whimsey Stamps to cut out the sentiments in the Grouchy Pet set as well as a blank set to hand write in my own sentiment on the inside of the card.

When I was in my stash of stencils I also stumbled upon the Kitty Paws stencil from One Heart One Mind and couldn't resist adding it around the inside of my card with Distress Inks Black Soot and Frayed Burlap.
